Here are the steps to paint a popcorn ceiling:
1. Prep the area by wrapping the walls in plastic sheeting and the floors in drop cloths. Do the same for the lighting fixtures using covers and painter’s tape.
2. Start scraping off any loose or peeling paint with a scraper.
3. Vacuum the mess.
4. Cut in along the edges of the ceiling with a brush loaded with paint.
5. Load your roller with paint and apply it to the popcorn ceiling in one direction, taking care not to saturate the ceiling with paint.
6. Apply a second coat if necessary.
